A quick guide to the styles, leather and fit — so you can pick the right headstall with confidence.

Sliding One-Ear Headstall

A sliding one-ear headstall has a separate leather ear piece that slides along the crownpiece, allowing it to be positioned comfortably around the horse's ear. It offers a clean, minimal western look and can be adjusted to suit the horse's head and ear placement.

Split-Ear Headstall

A split-ear headstall has an opening cut directly into the crownpiece for the horse's ear. The position is fixed, unlike the adjustable leather ear piece on a sliding one-ear headstall. It can also be worn as a belt-style headstall by placing the crownpiece normally over the poll without putting the horse's ear through the split.

Browband Headstall

A browband headstall offers the most secure fit. The browband and throatlatch work together to keep the headstall properly positioned and help prevent it from shifting toward the horse's eyes. Browband styles are especially well suited to O-ring and D-ring bits, where the added stability helps keep everything securely in place.

Metal-Ring Headstalls

Roughout vs. Smooth Leather

Roughout leather is made with the suede side facing outward. It offers extra grip, hides everyday wear and gives tack a rugged working-ranch look.

Smooth-grain leather is easier to wipe clean and beautifully showcases tooling, stitching, buckstitching and polished finishes. Choose roughout for a textured, hard-working style or smooth leather for a cleaner, more refined finish.

How to Choose the Right Headstall

Start with the bit and the level of stability your horse needs.

Choose a browband headstall for the most secure fit, particularly when using an O-ring or D-ring bit. Choose a sliding one-ear for adjustable ear placement and a clean, minimal appearance. Choose a split-ear for a traditional fixed-ear design or wear it as a simple belt-style headstall.

Then select the leather and details that suit your riding style, whether that means roughout ranch tack, polished smooth leather, tooling, buckstitching, beadwork or metal-ring hardware. Choosing pieces from the same collection also makes it easy to coordinate your headstall with a matching breast collar and reins.

How to Measure for Fit

Measure from one corner of the horse’s mouth, up the cheek and over the poll, to the opposite corner of the mouth.

The headstall should adjust near the middle holes, leaving room to tighten or loosen it. Position the bit so it sits comfortably at the corners of the mouth, generally creating one or two soft wrinkles.

On a browband headstall, make sure the browband sits comfortably below the ears without pulling the crownpiece forward. The throatlatch should be secure without being tight, leaving approximately four fingers of space underneath it.

What’s the difference between sliding one-ear, split-ear and browband?

A sliding one-ear has a separate leather ear piece that adjusts along the crownpiece; a split-ear has a fixed opening cut into the crownpiece (and can also be worn belt-style). How do I know what size to order?

Every headstall is handmade from full-grain leather with stainless-steel hardware that resists rust from sweat, rain and wash-downs. Metal-ring styles use premium plated finishes over solid base hardware.

How do I care for my leather headstall?

Wipe off sweat and dust after riding, let it dry naturally (never by a heater), and condition lightly when the leather feels dry. Leather should flex, not flop — go easy on the oil.

Can I get a matching breast collar and reins?
